Rare earth elements (rees) comprise a group of 17 elements with very similar chemical and physical properties, which include scandium (sc, z=21), yttrium (y, z=39), and the lanthanides with successive atomic numbers (z from 57 to 71).

Resource figures are current as at 31 december 2018.

The group consists of yttrium and the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium. The group of metals referred to as rare earth elements (ree) comprises the 15 elements of the lanthanide series. They are usually divided into the light ree (lree) and the heavy ree (hree); Rare earth elements or rare earth metals are one of 17 chemical elements within the periodic table.
